1991 Fleer Ultra #210

Card Review: 7.5  I remember feeling a little bit sorry for Fleer in 1991.  It was first year they put out this "Ultra" set, which was an obvious response to the "premium" cards being put out by Upper Deck.  I'm no fan of these "premium" cards (I like my cards packed in wax, with raw cardboard backs and gum), but I still felt a little bad for Fleer.  In a vacuum this is pretty nice card.  But Topps also put out a "premium" set in '91 for the first time, and their Stadium Club set absolutely blew this and everything else out of the water.  Did Fleer know this would be the case?  I'm sure they knew Topps (and everyone else) was going to be putting out "premium" card sets, but did they have any idea just how much nicer Topps would be?  In any event, Fleer upped their ante in future editions of Ultra, and baseball cards as they had been known for the previous half-century more or less ceased to exists.

1995 Fleer Ultra #401 Gold Medallion

Card Review: 6.1  I slightly prefer this to the standard '95 Fleer Ultra.  There really isn't all that much difference.  It doesn't show, but in right light the center of the "Medallion" in the upper left gives off a sort of prism effect.

1994 Fleer Ultra #220

Card Review: 8.3  The photo quality is pretty nice on the front of this card, but I'm just not wild about this Ultra set.  The backs feel generic, and ultimately it's not much different than 50+ plus other sets from the mid 90's.  The idea of the gold strip carrying over from the front to the back is kind of novel, but for reason I just don't like it.  I give them credit for trying, and definitely would have supported the idea when brainstorming design ideas, but in application, it just doesn't work.  Maybe it needed to carry all four edges, but full bleed photos were all the rage then.

Card Review: 9.1  I like the '93 Ultra design.  For the most part it's identical to the '92 design, except the fake marble is brown instead of green.  I didn't buy a ton of this set, but I remember opening a ton of the '93 Ultra Basketball set, which was identical in design.

Card Review: 8.8  I remember really liking these cards when they came out.  Ultra basketball cards used the same design, and I bought a ton of them.  Now, eh.  It's not a horrible design, but the back combination of "fancy" computer graphics and fake marble just really wasn't a good idea.  For this particular card, at least it's got a shot of the red b.p. jersey going in it's favor.

1996 Fleer Ultra #329

Card Review: 4.2  This is one of only a handful of cards to depict Wallach in an Angels uniform, and one the better ones to do so.  It's a clean, crisp design with good image quality from Fleer Ultra.  I would rather see career stats on the back instead of two pictures (That's what the front is for!), but I understand that's not what Ultra was going for.

For reasons I can't explain, I love seeing coaches sitting in folding chairs during Spring Training games, as depicted on the front of this card.  It's probably due to my love of Spring Training games.

1995 Fleer Ultra #401

Card Review: 5.9  The black and white picture on the back would have made a much better card front.  Instead they went with the typical fielding shot that appears on about half of all Wallach cards produced after 1990.   I swear it was over-cast for every photo ever taken at Shea Stadium.

Fun Facts: Wallach missed significant time to injury in 1995, but returned for the Playoffs.
