1991 Topps Micro #220

Card Review: 2.1  This card is even smaller than the Cracker Jack version.  There is no shortage of variations for the '91 Topps card.  The base, Tiffany, OPC, Desert Storm, cracker jack and this one.  Not sure we really needed two tiny editions.

1991 Cracker Jack un-cut "sheet"

Card Review: Incomplete  I'm not calling this a "card" even though a feels a lot more like a card than the regular Cracker Jack card.  While I'm not calling this a card, I still like it a lot, and the player selection is fantastic.  I always viewed Kelly Gruber as the slightly inferior American League Tim Wallach.  Like Wallach, he was a great player who didn't get nearly the attention he deserved because he played in Canada.  Howard Johnson on the other hand, was not one of my favorites.  He did however provided me with a nice example to use in arguments as to the levels Super Star status Wallach would have reached  had he played in New York.  DeShields was/is/remains one of my personal favorites.

1991 Topps Tiffany #220

Card Review: 8.9  I don't know if it's just this card, or if they're all like this, but I find the coloring a bit weird on the front.  It seems less "Tiffany" and more "sun bleached" to me.  There's no shortage of 1991 Topps variations out there and this one doesn't really distinguish itself one way or the other.  I've never been too wild about this card, though I've always like the '91 design.

*Update* It believed that there were 4,000 sets produced for this product

1991 Topps Desert Shield #220

Card Review: 8.9  This set is identical to the 1991 Topps except for the foil stamping on the front.  I like them better without the stamp.  These cards were given to service men in 1991.  They're supposed to be rare/hard to find, but I see them everywhere, they're just priced like they're rare.  I have a feeling that more than a few of them went to card dealers in addition to service men and women.

1991 Topps #220

Card Review: 8.7  A solid but unspectacular card for the Topps base card Wallach issue of 1991.  I consider 1991 the last "real" Topps set, as from 1957-1991 the basic design was unchanged.  In 1992 they switched to white card board stock, in 1993 they went glossy on the back, and by 1995 the basic card was lost forever.

Fun Facts: in 1991 Wallach was hit by 6 pitches, good for 6th in the NL
* Wallach led all NL third basemen in fielding percentage in 1991
* On May 4, 1991, Wallach went 1/3 with 4 walks in a 13 inning 6-5 loss to the Padres
* This card # is 220.  Topps reserved card #'s ending in zero for the game's best players

1991 Topps Cracker Jack #21

Card Review: 5.5  These were inserted into boxes of Cracker Jacks.  They're tiny.  Too small really.  At the time, I took a lot of vindication in Wallach being included in the set.  Having a favorite player who played in Montreal prior to the internet and espn2, ect., left me with a bit of chip on my shoulder, and I took the little victories wherever I could get them.  To my knowledge Howard Johnson and Chris Sabo were not in this set.
